Cherry Hill West’s boys’ basketball team used a late spurt to down pesky Eastern, 50-44 in an Olympic Conference interdivisional game.
Trailing 44-42, West scored the game’s final eight points. The Lions tied it on two free throws by Derrick Ray with 1 minute and 2 seconds left.
Ray then made a steal and fed Mickel Orr for a layup, giving West the lead for good with 31 seconds left.
Chris Gebhart, a 6-foot-8 senior, had 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots for West. Kyle Jose, a 6-2 Eastern senior, led the Vikings with 13 points.
West is now 2-0, while Eastern fell to 0-2.
