Earlier this week, Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey joked that the only way New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie wouldn't be in the crowd to watch the Irish take on Wisconsin would be if a certain presidential candidate forbade it.

"He only shows up for the big games," Brey cracked about Christie's love of live sporting events. "He'll be there in Philly -- if Trump will let him."

Brey was right. Christie was courtside in Philadelphia Friday night to watch Notre Dame, where his daughter, Sarah, is a team manager, upend Wisconsin 61-56 at the Wells Fargo Center.

Despite the wild finish, it seems all anyone wants to talk about is Christie's handling of his M&Ms during the game.

"Chris Christie pouring his bag of M&M's into a bigger bag of MORE M&M's is a savage and perplexing move," tweeted Pete Blackburn, sports editor for Uproxx, as he shared a photo that quickly went viral.

The photo was retweeted nearly 5,000 times in just the first hour, and drew an avalanche of snarky responses from fans:

Some took to Twitter to defend Christie:

Daily News columnist Will Bunch was among those criticizing Christie for traveling out of state so often:

It's likely Christie will return to the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday, where Notre Dame will take on No. 1 seed North Carolina. If the Irish manage the upset, Christie will have to travel all the way to Houston to watch the Final Four.
