The ceremonial lighting of the Rittenhouse Square Christmas trees is set for 5 p.m. Thursday, VisitPhilly reports.

Besides the tree, the square will glow with 5,000 colorful globes strung in the square's trees, the tourist organization says.

On Friday, the Christmas tree will be lit at the Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest on Penn's Landing  5:30 p.m. Friday.

The PECO-sponsored tree has tens of thousands of bluetooth-programmable LED lights, according to Delaware River Waterfront Corp.

The evening's events include a cast of performers, singers, dancers, and ice skaters, a visit from Santa Claus and fireworks. The pyrotechnics are slated to begin about 7:25 p.m.
