Brewpub planned for the Piazza at Schmidt's

No lagers are planned - which is a bit of a kick, since this brewpub will be mere yards from where Christian Schmidt and his family brewed German-style beers for 127 years.

The crew behind the region's four Landmark Americana pubs is laying out plans for a brewpub at the Piazza at Schmidt's in Northern Liberties.

Dave Goldman, who helped found Landmark 13 years ago, says the still-unnamed project, which they hope to open in early 2017, will take the space on Second Street last used by King's Oak.

The brewer will be Goldman himself. A longtime homebrewer now attending the University of the Sciences' Brewing Science Certificate program, he's ordered a 7-barrel system. Specialty will be small batches of hoppy beers that he wants to sell fresh and rotate out (three or four a week), though he also will make the likes of stouts, fruit and vegetable beers, and wheat beers among the dozen tap offerings.

But no lagers - which is a bit of a kick, since this brewpub will be mere yards from where Christian Schmidt and his family brewed German-style beers for 127 years.

The menu will include wood-fired pizzas with naturally leavened dough.

Details on decor are being worked out by Lighthouse Design. Goldman - whose partners are Tony, Felipe, and Max Cammarata, Tom Revelli, and Kevin McCabe - said the pizza ovens, brew house, and outdoor seating on the Piazza all would be highly visible from inside.

Josh Weiss of MSC Retail, who handled the lease, said the space - the largest in the Piazza - is "critical for the development of the Piazza."

"We envision this as the next great gathering place for the community," said Sean Gavin, property manager at the Piazza. "It's an homage to the area's past but also something unique that will appeal to a wide group of people."
