Restaurant notes: Varalli adding a pub on the Avenue of the Arts

He will combine his two Broad Street restaurants and go upstairs with a taproom.

Joe Varalli is combining his bilevel Italian seafood operation at Broad and Locust Streets -- Upstares at Varalli and Sotto Varalli -- into one ground-floor restaurant simply called Varalli.

After 21 years, the Upstares space is being remodeled to become a gastropub called Perch Pub. (Varalli loves to pun on the second floor's position over the Avenue of the Arts.)

He promises a large selection of local micro-brewed beers on tap, a full bar, an American-inspired menu of comfort food from CIA-trained chef William Carroll), and unpretentious airs (pool table, dart board, juke box, HDTVs and a large drop-down projection screen for big games.)

Opening is slated for later this month.
