The election-watchdog group Committee of Seventy wants to put 150 to 160 volunteers into two legislative districts where primary Election Day battles could be heated.
The highest-profile battle is in the 1st Senate District, which extends from South Philly through Center City into the lower Northeast. That's where John Dougherty, Anne Dicker and Lawrence Farnese are battling to succeed state Sen. Vince Fumo.
"Anne is no sweet little thing,Doc is Doc and Fumo's hand will still be in this somewhere," said Zack Stalberg, Seventy's president, about the potential for mischief.
The other hot race is in the lower Northeast's 179th House District, where state Rep. Tony Payton tries to hold off Guy Lewis, who has most of the district's ward leaders on his side.
Seventy will have additional volunteers around the city. Those interested in promoting a trouble-free Election Day should call Seventy's Nina Bloch at 215-557-3600 or sign up at the Web site, www.seventy.org. *
