Brigantine officer gets 5 years for sex assault of 16-year-old

A Brigantine police officer will spend five years in prison after admitting he used his job to sexually assault a 16-year-old girl, officials announced Sunday.

Officer Ralph M. Pereira, 45, pleaded guilty Friday to official misconduct and sexual assault, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.

He was arrested in 2014 and charged with using his job as a police officer "to obtain a benefit for himself, specifically, sexual acts with a child," the prosecutor's office said.

Jay McKeen, a spokesman for the office, said that Pereira had been suspended from the force since his arrest, and that the department would start the firing process. He will be imprisoned for five years following a sentencing hearing on July 1, the office said.

Pereira will also have to register as a sex offender, the office said. - Chris Palmer

Suit-wearing girl gets her night at the prom - at another school

A student who was barred from attending the prom at her high school in Harrisburg because she wore a suit rather than a dress had it her way - though with a different school, a half-hour away.

Aniya Wolf, a student at Bishop McDevitt High School, attended William Penn High School's prom Saturday at a banquet hall in York.

Wolf said she learned at the last moment that girls were required to wear dresses to Bishop McDevitt's prom. She went anyway but was thrown out. The school said the dress code was sent to parents three months earlier.

William Penn principal Brandon Carter said he invited Wolf because "we do embrace all." Wolf said she has worn a shirt and pants for all three years she has attended her school.
