Mmm, doughnuts, as Homer Simpson says.

Mmm, free doughnuts - even better.

Today's National Donut Day - who knew? - and a couple of national chains are celebrating with handouts.

No purchase is necessary to get a glazed at Krispy Kreme locations, including the two in the Philadelphia area: 41 S. 16th St., across from Liberty Place, and 7855 Oxford Ave. in the city's Fox Chase section.

(Collingswood and Bensalem outlets are expected to open later this year.)

At any Dunkin Donuts, you'll have to buy an unbottled drink, but you'll get your pick among the many flavors.

Six chances to win $50 are also being given to Dunkin Donuts followers on Twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/DunkinDonuts). After questions are posted, winners will be randomly selected from those who guess correctly, "using the hashtag #DDonut."

Also, Krispy Kreme has a donation program today benefiting the Salvation Army, which created National Donut Day in 1938 to raise money for the needy. You'll have to print out an online voucher (www.krispykremephilly.com/salvationarmy) and buy a dozen Original Glazed.

National Donut Day is the first Friday in June.
