Speedy Morris wins 700th high school game

Coaching legend Speedy Morris earned the 700th win of his high school career Friday as St. Joseph's Prep rolled over St. George's (Del.), 67-48, in the in 12th annual Pete and Jameer Nelson Play-by-Play Classic at Widener.

Coaching legend Speedy Morris earned the 700th win of his high school career Friday as St. Joseph's Prep rolled over St. George's (Del.), 67-48, in the in 12th annual Pete and Jameer Nelson Play-by-Play Classic at Widener.

Morris, 74, is a prominent figure on the Philadelphia basketball landscape. He coached both men and women at La Salle University - his 238 wins are the most for the La Salle men - and boys at Roman Catholic and Penn Charter.

Morris has been at the Prep since 2001 and has 981 wins at all levels. His career high school record is 700-199 for a .778 winning percentage.

In 16 seasons, Morris is 312-103 at the Prep. He was 41-14 in two seasons with the Penn Charter boys and 347-82 in 14 seasons with the Roman Catholic boys.

On Friday, Kyle Thompson led the Hawks with 21 points as they outscored St. George's, 22-6, in the third quarter.
