Rotating Dan Vladař and Joseph Woll has yielded steady results. But is it time for the Flyers to ride the hot goalie?

Vladař and Woll have played eight games apiece and have almost identical numbers. But with the team needing to make a run, could one guy separate himself and grab the No. 1 job?

On game days, Dan Vladař has a routine.

Whether at home in South Philly or on the road, the goaltender sits in his stall in the Flyers locker room, and as his teammates filter through the door, he begins to clean.

It’s a meticulous process and fascinating to watch as he wipes each pad down with a mixture of magic eraser and alcohol, stops to check, and keeps going. The number of magic erasers or gallons of alcohol he has gone through is tough to gauge, but he’s been doing this process for years.

“I just think it looks a little bit better, and also the white kind of sticks out, just makes me look a little bit bigger,” the 6-foot-5 goalie said with a smile recently.

That’s a good thing for a goalie who protects a six-by-four net for a living.

Right now, the Flyers’ goaltending situation is a true rotation. Only Joseph Woll has started two straight contests in the second — the second night of a back-to-back — and third games of the season.

On Oct. 26, coach Rick Tocchet said he and goaltending coach Kim Dillabaugh spoke about the back-and-forth and how they were inching closer to letting one goalie ride the wave of good play sooner rather than later. Now 16 games into the season, have things taken a larger step forward?

“I think there’s something to give a guy a couple games in a row, and then see where it goes, and then you just play from there,” said Tocchet on Monday, hinting Vladař could make his second-straight appearance after a 19-save victory over the Utah Mammoth on Sunday.

Tocchet mentioned the upcoming schedule, especially a back-to-back on Sunday against the Calgary Flames and Monday against the coach’s old team, the Vancouver Canucks. The weekend of Nov. 14-15, the Flyers also wrap up a road trip against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday before returning home to face the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.

“Also, you’ve got to have a feel too,” the bench boss added. “I talk to [Dillabaugh and say] ... ‘Hey, let’s play this guy. I got a feeling this guy’s got to have a good game.’ Sometimes there’s a feel factor, but I think there’s a lot of schedule, take a look, make sure we [don’t] overtax the guy. But still, if a guy played a really good game, maybe it’s time to get him in again.”

Sunday’s win was the Flyers’ fourth of the year. The goalies have not been at fault. While the team has averaged the 12th-most goals against (3.31), they’ve allowed the sixth-most shots per game (29.8) and, on the other end, are averaging 2.19 goals, the fewest in the NHL.

According to Natural Stat Trick, at five-on-five, the Flyers are also one of three teams with under 100 high-danger shot attempts, rank 31st in high-danger chances for percentage (39.29%), and are tied for the sixth-most high-danger goals allowed.

“Since game one, they’ve probably been our two best players,” said forward Trevor Zegras. “It’s unfortunate that when you get that good of goaltending, that you don’t have more wins. But they’ve been two rocks back there for us all season.”

The two come from different backgrounds — Vladař grew up in Prague, Czech Republic and Woll in Missouri — and while Vladař is very chatty, Woll is a bit more reserved. But while they complement and compliment each other, they push each other, too.

“He’s an awesome dude. He’s always very positive, and he’s also a really vocal guy in the locker room, which is awesome to see,” Woll said of Vladař in late October. “Takes on a bit of a leadership role with the team, and ... he’s such a hard worker. He’s such a positive guy for our team that [it] seems like success is just inevitable when you have those qualities.”

The pair have evenly split the first 16 games as the Flyers’ goaltending is the least of the team’s worries. According to Money Puck, among the 53 goalies who have played in at least five games this year, Woll ranks 12th in goals saved above average (3.4), and Vladař is 25th (0.1). If you take out the Flyers’ 7-0 loss in the season opener where Vladař was largely hung out to dry, both goaltenders have identical .899 save percentages on the season. Compared to the past few years, it is a new luxury for the Orange and Black to have two reliable goalies.

“My big philosophy with the goalies: I want them to be who they are,” said Tocchet. “If they’re going to try to cover for our mistakes in front of them, it’s tough for the goalie. ... This year, it’s been a little bit of chaos sometimes, not all the time, and I think our goalies [have] been unreal handling the chaos. They’ve been [handling it] very well.

“... I’m lucky because those two are great character guys, and they understand. They’re team-first guys, too.

Breakaways

Sunday was a career night for Jamie Drysdale. The defenseman posted his first career three-point night with three assists and was also plus-5, besting his previous high of plus-4 on April 1, 2022, while a member of the Anaheim Ducks. “I played a lot of games with him [and] I’ve never seen him plus-5,” laughed Zegras. “I told him I threw my phone when I saw that. Yeah, awesome. Super happy for him, probably slept great.” ... The Flyers sent Alex Bump down to Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League on Monday. Bump, who made the Flyers out of training camp but was sent down in early October, does not have a point in eight games this season. The Flyers don’t want the shoot-first, winger skating on the fourth line or to be a healthy scratch, and the Phantoms play three games in four nights on the road starting Wednesday. Tocchet hinted it may not be a long stint in the minors for Bump, who would be eligible to be recalled as soon as Thursday. ... Forward Travis Konecny, who returned to action Sunday after missing 10 games with a lower-body injury, did not practice Monday. Tocchet said it was a maintenance day.
