For some Americans, it’s easy to forget that the United States is not the only country with large numbers of immigrants. Argentina certainly conjures images of Spanish-inflected culture, but its citizenry’s heritage reflects a diverse mosaic because of a massive wave of European immigration in the 19th and 20th centuries. Take the story of Finca Flichman, one of Argentina’s most reliable value brands, for example. It is one of the few Argentine wineries to have more than 100 years of history. In 1873, a Jewish immigrant from Poland named Sami Flichman, who was in the textile business, won a winery in a card game. At that time, winemaking in South America was rudimentary at best. However, “Don Sami” was among the first to see the region’s potential for high quality red wine and began planting his estate in Barrancas with vineyards. More importantly, he sent his son Isaac to France to study oenology and winemaking. Isaac continued to pursue his father’s vision and eventually produced a top of the line malbec called “Caballero de la Cepa” that helped draw international attention to the Mendoza region and its uncommonly rich red wines. Today, Finca Flichman is owned by a Portuguese wine company and continues to make excellent wines from its extensive vineyard holdings. This affordable example features an inky purple hue in the glass and effusive flavors of boysenberries and pomegranate molasses, with graceful aromatic accents of candied violets and roasted beets.
