Chester County man who allegedly threatened his family and shot at police charged with attempted homicide
Stephen J. Buxton was arrested Friday after he was treated for his injuries and released from Paoli Memorial Hospital, police said. No law enforcement officers were injured in the Feb. 11 shooting.
A Chester County man who last month, authorities allege, barricaded himself in a home, threatened to kill family members, fired at police, and was shot by officers in return, has been charged with attempted homicide and assault of law enforcement.
Stephen J. Buxton, 35, of East Goshen Township, also was charged with reckless endangerment, making terroristic threats, and related offenses. He was arrested Friday after he was released from Paoli Hospital, police said.
On Feb. 11, police responded to the 900 block of Cornwallis Drive in East Goshen Township because a woman reported that Buxton threatened to kill her, her daughter, his father, himself, and police, according to police.
Buxton refused to leave the home when officers arrived and barricaded himself inside, police said.
After three hours of law enforcement’s attempts to negotiate over a loudspeaker, Buxton fired 13 shots from a .45-caliber handgun, police said Friday. No officers were injured, but Buxton hit an armored vehicle that had members of the West Chester Regional Emergency Response Team inside and outside, according to law enforcement.
In response, police shot two rounds, injuring Buxton, according to law enforcement. The Chester County District Attorney’s Office ruled that the shooting was justified.
Police said Buxton’s family said he struggles with mental-health issues.
Buxton is being held on $500,000 bail at Chester County Prison. Court documents filed Friday did not list a lawyer for him.
