National Singles Week isn't until September 17-23. But anyone who has picked up a Daily News this week knows we're not waiting until then to recognize standouts in the local single population. That said, here are some factoids from the U.S. Census Bureau about unmarried Americans that you might find of interest. If nothing else, you can spout them off the next time prying relatives come at you with the dreaded, "why aren't you married" question.
*There are 92 million single Americans - 42 percent of the population - over the age of 18.
*An estimated 54 percent of unmarried Americans are female. (Why is this not surprising?)
*There 86 unmarried men for every 100 single woman.
*Sixty percent of unmarried Americans have never married; 25 percent are divorced and and 15 percent are widowed.
*There are 15 million unmarried folks aged 65 and older.
*A total of 50.7 million households are headed by single folks. That translates to 44 percent of all U.S. households. (As people delay marriage, more singles are heading households these days.)
*Twenty seven percent of all households are headed by folks who live alone - a 17 percent increase since 1970.
