Bigger Lovers Reunion
The Bigger Lovers big reunion show is Saturday night at Johnny Brenda's. The formidable foursome's 2001 release How I Stopped Worrying has just been re-issued. That's a picture of Miles the cat, the late 22 pounder who gave the band its name, and who is also the inspiration behind the Lover' label, Miles Above. Here's what Inquirer scribe Steve Klinge said about the band in an item that got lost on its way into yesterday's paper: "For a time, the Bigger Lovers were Philly’s best guitar pop band, regularly putting on great shows in clubs across the city and releasing three excellent albums. The quartet had connoisseurs’ roots: in the hooky crunch of the Move, the acerbic pop punk of the Only Ones, and the witty songcraft of the Soft Boys (to name three bands the Lovers covered). Both guitarist Bret Tobias and bassist Scott Jefferson wrote sharp, punchy songs with cathartic choruses, propelled by Ed Hogarty’s lead guitar and sometime-Inquirer scribe Pat Berkery’s drums." Trouser Press critic Ira Robbins gives How I Stopped Worrying its due here. Info on the Johnny Brenda's show, which also features (Smithereens drummer) Dennis Diken and Bell Sound, is here. Below, you can hear and buy the brand new Little Giant EP, and watch a "Bought Your Ghost" clip from back in the day.
