The Chester County Bar Foundation awarded a $2,500 scholarship to a senior at Downingtown West High School last month, while also donating $2,500 to the organization of her choice.

Laura Foti bested seven other applicants from across the county for the 2008 Charles E. Swope scholarship, given yearly since 1992 in honor of the former West Chester banker and attorney.

Applicants had to complete a questionnaire listing their academic and civic achievements, as well as submit an essay.

Foti, who plans to spend next year studying in Argentina before heading to Syracuse University in the fall of 2009, received the scholarship at a luncheon at West Chester Golf and Country Club on May 16.

For winning the scholarship, Foti also earned the honor of selecting an organization for the foundation to donate a $2,500 grant to; she chose the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County.
