Two swimmers are dead and a third is missing after getting caught up in rip currents off the coast of Atlantic City and Wildwood on Saturday.

The Coast Guard called off its search yesterday morning for Juan Moore, 28, of Philadelphia, one of three friends who tried to swim to a buoy about 100 yards offshore at Schellenger Avenue in Wildwood at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Chris McLaughlin. No lifeguards were on duty.

Ishmael Lopez, 36, of Philadelphia was pulled from the water by rescuers but later died, said Wildwood police. Jason Booker, 34, of Cinnaminson, is in good condition.

In Atlantic City, a man died after lifeguards pulled him from a current in chest-deep water at about 3 p.m. Saturday, said Beach Patrol Chief Rod Aluise.

The dangerous surf is being caused by tropical storm Bertha, which is approaching Bermuda in the Atlantic Ocean.
