Lights in the Darkness pictured at City Hall during Suicide Awareness Month

More than 100 life-size lantern figures light the night in Dilworth Park at City Hall for all affected by mental health illness, whether their own or a loved one’s.

The human-size lantern figures stand as a representation of those who have struggled and those who continue to struggle with mental health issues.

The "Lights in the Darkness" project, sponsored by the Irish Diaspora Center of Philadelphia, was designed to raise awareness, spark the conversation, and reduce the stigma of mental health issues that lead to suicidality. Irish artist Tom Meskell worked with local volunteers to create the life-size, wire sculptures covered in paper and varnish, and lit from within. If you or someone you know is thinking of suicide, call or text 988.
