A New York man who police say was impaired by a combination of drugs when he was involved in a fatal car accident last year in Southampton Township has been charged with manslaughter, the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office said.

Besim Begaj, 28, of Staten Island, was indicted Thursday on counts of first-degree aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance, authorities said.

Begaj was under the influence of marijuana and the prescription drug Xanax in August 2011 when the car he was driving crossed the center line and struck a tractor-trailer on Route 206, according to state police. He and a passenger, Agim Cira, 23, were flown to Cooper University Hospital, where Cira died.

Begaj is free on $100,000 bail. His arraignment in Superior Court has not yet been set.
