About six months ago, a friend of mine informed me of a movie he thought I would like to see. We watched the trailer and instantly fell in love with the movie,
Across the Universe.
We must have watched it 400 times until finally, we were able to see it in theatres earlier this month. Despite what some critics say, the movie was amazing. From the second it began, I was mesmerized by the camera shots, the on-screen musical talent, and the overall plot of the movie. It takes place in the 1960's, where a young man, Jude, is going to America to find his estranged father. While there, he falls in love with a, sheltered young girl named Lucy. Vietnam was just around the corner and before long, Lucy's brother Max is drafted to fight, leading Jude and Lucy to become involved in peace activism. Their love story, along with the struggle for free speech, sex, drugs, civil rights, and rock and roll, is intertwined with the current anti-war movements, causing for explosive drama. There are over 30 Beatles songs that are incorporated into the plot which complement the film beautifully. Overall, I recommend this artsy flick to anyone who is looking for a mind blowing, creative, and visually stimulating movie in their horizon.
