CONCORD TWP. Wawa Inc. wants to make Concord Township residents' trip to the chain even more convenient.
Representatives of the Delaware County-based chain appeared before the Concord Township Board of Supervisors on Tuesday seeking approval to begin selling six-packs at the store on Naamans Creek Road in Chadds Ford. A decision is expected to be made by the supervisors July 21.
Some residents at the hearing worried the plan might lead to raucous behavior or loitering. Acme, Whole Foods, and Giant supermarkets in the area already sell beer, and a Wegmans slated to open in Chadds Ford in the fall has been granted approval.
Wawa does not currently sell beer in Pennsylvania. The chain sells beer in Virginia and Florida.
Wawa said the location would comply with Pennsylvania's alcohol regulations, which include creating a separate space within the location that would provide seating for 30 or more customers.
"We view this as a single-store product expansion," the company said in a statement, adding that it might look to expand beer sales in other locations after evaluating the Chadds Ford store. - Caitlin McCabe
