When Joe Abbott was pondering the wisdom of buying a new house for himself and his wife, Diane, his tax adviser had a pointed question for him: “How much fun do you have with your mutual funds?”

Joe has known the adviser since they were in first grade together, so the advice carried a lot of weight. The Abbotts bought the larger house in Lower Gwynedd, both as a good investment and for ample cavorting space for the grandchildren.

“We upsized,” says Joe, a retired financial executive with a pharmaceutical firm, leaving behind a smaller “carriage home” — in this case, Realtor-ese for an upscale twin — in Upper Gwynedd.

The couple bought that three-bedroom, 3½-bath house in a cul de sac in a development with Belgian block-lined streets right after it was built in 2014.

The first floor features tray ceilings and an open floor plan with hardwood floors throughout.

The house has a formal dining room with large windows and a gourmet kitchen with 42-inch cabinetry, granite countertops, a large island, stainless steel appliances, a tile backsplash, and a breakfast room with access to the back deck.

The great room opens to the kitchen and has crown molding and recessed lighting and a marble gas fireplace.

The living room is separated from the rest of the first floor and could be used as a home office.

Upstairs, the primary bedroom has two walk-in closets, a sitting room, and a bath with designer cabinetry, granite countertops, a double sink vanity, soaking tub, and tiled shower.

Two additional bedrooms share a full bath with shower/tub combination.

The finished basement has recessed lighting, a bar area, carpeting and a full bathroom. There is two-car garage parking, a wide driveway, basement storage space, and mature landscaping.

The 3,502-square-foot house is in the North Penn School District.

It is listed by Ron and Carol Young of Keller Williams Blue Bell for $650,000.
