Traffic on Ben Franklin, snarled by car fire, moving again

Traffic is beginning to flow normally again on the Ben Franklin Bridge following a 2 p.m. car fire that shut down the westbound lanes and turned part of the bridge into a parking lot, according to Michael Williams, spokesman for the Delaware River Port Authority.

Williams said two westbound lanes were now open, but there was still some residual congestion at the toll plaza. He expected the congestion would dissipate by 4:15 p.m. and said the third westbound lane would be reopened shortly.

A tow truck removed the damaged car at 2:30. Although no one was injured, a passenger in the car was taken to a hospital for observation, Williams said.

Eastbound lanes were not affected by the car fire.
