Diocese in Pa. warns colleges on birth control
SCRANTON - Leaders of a northeastern Pennsylvania diocese have asked the presidents of four area Catholic colleges and universities for "assurance" that they are not providing contraceptives or encouraging their use among students.
SCRANTON - Leaders of a northeastern Pennsylvania diocese have asked the presidents of four area Catholic colleges and universities for "assurance" that they are not providing contraceptives or encouraging their use among students.
Bishop Joseph F. Martino and Auxiliary Bishop John M. Dougherty sent a letter Wednesday asking the presidents of King's College, Misericordia University, Marywood University, and the University of Scranton to provide information about their student health services.
The diocese said in a statement Friday that officials wanted to "have assurance that no practice is occurring which would be in violation of Catholic teaching." Officials said the letter was prompted by a March 25 article in the St. Joseph's University student newspaper saying the university finds "middle ground" between church doctrine and health care.
Misericordia University spokesman Paul Krzywicki said the four Catholic institutions planned to issue a joint statement on the matter tomorrow. - AP
