A 26-year-old Philadelphia police officer has died from injuries he sustained from a vehicle accident Sunday in the city’s Fox Chase section while he was off-duty, the police department said Monday night.

Nicolas Verrecchio was riding a 2009 Harley-Davidson motorcycle south on the 8500 block of Verree Road when a 2013 Acura MDX attempted to make a U-turn to travel northbound and entered into the path of the motorcycle just before 5 p.m. Sunday, the police department said.

Verrecchio was transported by medics to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

The department said Verrecchio died on Monday. He was assigned to the 18th District.

The driver of the Acura remained at the scene of the crash, which is under police investigation.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Officer Verrecchio’s family, friends, and fellow officers during this incredibly difficult time,” the department said in a statement Monday night.
